About the Historic Preservation Commission
Created in 1968 as the Historic District Commission, today's Historic Preservation Commission is part of the Annapolis city government. It consists of two employees, Lisa M. Craig, Chief of Historic Preservation and Shari L. Pippen, Historic Preservation Assistant and seven residents of the City of Annapolis appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the city council for three year terms.
The purpose of the HPC is to safeguard the City's heritage as reflected in its unique plan, in its three centuries of historic architecture, and its broadly visible waterfront. To accomplish this task the HPC is required to review all building permits for work done on the exterior of buildings within the historic district prior to issuing a Certificate of Approval. The review is based on the provisions in Chapter 21.56 of the Annapolis City Code. Through this process the HPC can ensure the preservation of the City's distinctive character.
