Lights ON Program
Did you know that about a fourth of U.S. homes have been burglarized and residence, of the home, victimized by violence each year?
Did you know that the average burglary criminal nets about $1,143?
After reading the statistics, which is more important to you?
- The operation of a 100 watt light bulb will cost about one cent per-hour.
- The price of not adequately lighting your home could turn out to be very, very expensive.
As part of our continued efforts to reduce crime in Annapolis, the Police Department is reminding all businesses and residents to keep their “Lights ON”. This is a crime prevention technique that can reduce the potential risk of citizens being victimized by opportunistic criminals. Something as simple as leaving your porch light on at night, ALL NIGHT, may keep you and your neighbors from becoming a victim.
Lights ON Tips
Exterior Lighting
- This is extremely important, especially near doors, drive-ways and in the rear of the home, where the majority of burglars do their work.
- Strategically place floodlights over doorways and garages. This will make your home less inviting to potential criminals.
- Replace burned out bulbs promptly.
- Don't make motion-activated lighting your only outside light source. All-night lighting studies have show to be moreeffective in deterring crime.
- Install lighting fixtures out of reach - A burglar will not be able to unscrew the bulb or tape off the motion sensor.
- Try to talk to your neighbors before purchasing new fixtures. Discuss the benefits of adding outside lighting, yet insure that your lighting doesn’t intrude into their homes.
Lighting Accessories
- Motion sensors - These turn on lights when something moves within a set perimeter.
- Timers - Are highly recommended and are used to turn on lights when you are away. Providing light inside your home to illuminate intruders, make it easier to see and report to police.
- Photo cells - Are relatively inexpensive and are easy to install. They save on electricity costs because they turn the light on when it gets dark, and turn off at daybreak.
