The Annapolis Police Department was formed on June 17,1867, making it one of the oldest police departments in the State of Maryland. With 130 sworn officers we are one of the ten largest agencies in the State. Basic Eligibility Requirements
- certified by the Maryland Police Training Commission (MPTC)
- within six (6) months of your 21st birthday
- a citizen of the United States
- graduated from high school or have obtained a State issued GED certificate
- applicants must qualify for a Maryland driver's license.
- have not been convicted of any felony crimes
- have not received a dishonorable discharge from the military
- have not used, tried or experimented with any illegal drug or narcotic within the past 36 months.
All applicants must be of good moral character and emotionally stable, as determined by a comprehensive background investigation, psychological screening conducted by a mental health professional, polygraph examination, drug testing and periodic drug screening.
Duties & Responsibilities
Police work involves considerable personal risk and requires the ability to immediately respond to emergency situations utilizing sound judgment. Duties and responsibilities of police officers, include, but are not limited to:
- Working rotating shifts
- being called back to duty when an emergency has been declared
- patrolling designated areas
- directing traffic.
Training
All Lateral Officers will be assigned to a Field Training Officer (FTO) who will provide additional on the job training for a specified period of time.

Salary
- Police Officer, $43,000.00 - $68,800.00 annually
