MARYLAND STATE HOUSE

GOVERNMENT BEGAN HERE

Annapolis has long been the hub of government. Not only was it the first municipality chartered in the colony (by Queen Anne, in 1708) it is also the county seat of Anne Arundel County, and the capital of Maryland.

For a brief period of time, it was also the capital of colonial America. It was here George Washington resigned his commission as commander in chief of the army and relinquished control of the new nation to civilian government.

The beautiful Maryland State House is the oldest state capitol still in continuous legislative use and is the only state house to have ever served as the nation's capitol. Information and photo are courtesy of Maryland State government.
