Mayor Buckley Announces Status Update
 of Police Chief Hiring Process

Annapolis, MD (May 13, 2019) – Mayor Gavin Buckley announced that the hiring of a new police chief for the City of Annapolis is on schedule. When Buckley announced the process in mid-March, he anticipated the search process would take 60 to 90 days.

A search committee convened and chaired by Annapolis City Manager Teresa Sutherland gathered data from a series of four community meetings held in late March and early April. City of Annapolis Human Resources then advertised the position.

Sixty individuals applied for the position. Their credentials were evaluated against the City of Annapolis Charter requirements and the preferred qualifications developed with the community’s input. Interview questions were formulated based on the traits and qualification criteria and from feedback gathered at the public community forums.

Members of the Police Chief Search Committee conducted a first round of interviews in early May and they plan to call back the top prospects for a second round of interviews to be held next week.

The committee will evaluate these second round candidates and forward three names to the Mayor for consideration. The Mayor and City Manager will select their choice and that candidate will have the opportunity to interact with the community and the City Council prior to a confirmation hearing. The City Council must confirm the Police Chief candidate before any swearing in.

“I am very pleased with the process and the inclusiveness with which we were able to bring the public along to make this very important hiring decision for the City,” said Mayor Gavin Buckley. “I understand the committee has a difficult task ahead because many outstanding candidates have applied.”
