Annapolis Solar Park Now Open

A new field of solar panels that sits on an 80-acre, capped Annapolis landfill started generating clean energy for the city. With 55,000 solar panels, the facility is one of the largest solar projects built on a capped landfill in the country. The City, Anne Arundel County and the Anne Arundel Board of Education all committed to purchase energy from the developer and the City expects it to reduce its electric bill by more than $100,000 a year.

Nominees Sought for 2019 MD Small Business Week Awards 

The U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Baltimore District Office is accepting nominations for the next Maryland “Small Business Person of the Year,” and to compete for the national title during National Small Business Week, May 5-11, 2019. Nominees are also sought for Maryland Small Business Exporter of the Year and a variety of other award categories. The submission deadline is Wednesday, January 9, 2019. Redesigned Affordable Rental Housing Locator

The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) launched a   new version of its free, web-based affordable rental housing locator, Landlords and property owners can list and advertise their affordable rental units at no cost. Potential tenants receive free access to the listings and can tailor their search for housing to include information on accessibility, neighborhood amenities, and other features. It also offers online technical support, a toll-free, multilingual call center and information about local resources for rental, legal, energy, veterans’ assistance and supportive housing for persons with disabilities.

New Website Connects Businesses to Workforce Development Tools

Governor Larry Hogan, in collaboration with the Maryland Departments of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, Commerce, Education, the Higher Education Commission, Human Services, and the State Department of Assessments and Taxation recently unveiled the Maryland Workforce Expressway, a new website that connects businesses to the full array of state workforce development resources. The Expressway, hosted within the Maryland Business Express website, makes it easier for business owners and entrepreneurs to plan, start, manage, and grow their business. Now, the Maryland Workforce Expressway connects those business owners and their employees with the education, training, and services they need to develop their workforce and thrive in Maryland.

Tax credit can help employers hiring new workers

Employers can take advantage of a valuable tax credit when hiring long-term unemployment recipients and other workers with employment barriers. The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) encourages employers to hire unemployed and disabled veterans, and other recipients of public assistance. A recent IRS news release outlines eligibility requirements and how to claim the credit. 

Save the Date for the Launch! Annapolis FounderTrac Demo Day  

The FounderTrac accelerator program culminates in a Demo Day on November 6 at the Hotel Annapolis, 126 West St, Annapolis. It is a public event attended by investors, press, entrepreneurs and other members of the startup community. Come cheer on the FounderTrac teams as they pitch their projects and be part of this amazing opportunity for the teams to get exposure and attract the resources that they need to take their companies to the next level. Some are expected to exit companies at $100M in revenues within five years.

Procurement Opportunity with the City of Annapolis 

The Central Purchasing Office of the City of Annapolis is accepting sealed bids for construction services for addition and renovation of the Eastport Fire Station until 2:00 p.m., local time, Wednesday, November 7, 2018. The scope of work includes, but is not limited to, the renovating and expanding the women’s restroom/locker room, constructing a 25’x40’ addition adjacent to the apparatus bays, installing new split unit HVAC systems, relocating gas meter, furnishing and installing new rubber membrane flat roof and related site improvements.

Maryland Business Express Expands Online Services

The Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT) has expanded its award-winning Maryland Business Express website to allow online filing of resolutions, which add, edit, or remove a resident agent and change the principal office location for businesses. In addition, Maryland Limited Liability Companies in good standing can now file Articles of Cancellation online. Documents updating customers on the status of their filings have been enhanced to provide more details, ensure authenticity, and increased security. With this update, more than 18,000 filings previously submitted by mail or in-person annually can now be filed online.
